For adventures in shopping and dining, the Cedros Design District won't disappoint with its offering of quaint stores, cafes, art galleries and of course, the infamous BellyUp Tavern where occasionally, a famous celebrity will break in a new set of songs. The best South of the Border cuisine can be tasted at Eden Garden's "Old Town," a must for Mexican food lovers and an old favorite with locals in the "Ranch", Del Mar and Solana Beach. Theatergoers can catch a performance at the North Coast Repertory Theater, a resident live theater company. The annual Fiesta del Sol, or "Holiday of the Sun" is held in June and is a celebration complete with arts and crafts, games, surf contests, music, food and a parade.

Solana Beach is now the home to both Amtrak and an express rail service called the Coaster, which runs from Oceanside to downtown San Diego, making Solana Beach even easier to visit.

* * *
The Cedros Design District has undergone a bit of redesign itself. The first phase of this $18 million operation was the relocation of the sewer system and the installation of a new storm drain.

The second phase was the actual lowering of the train tracks - - - about 30 feet below Lomas Santa Fe Dr. During this period, the train traveled through Solana Beach over a set of temporary tracks (known in construction circles as "shoo fly tracks"). Work on the new Lomas Santa Fe overpass is finished.

Now that this part of the project is completed, the newly designed system allows for better traffic flow and a more accessible Design District.

Recently completed is the the third and final phase of this project. This included the development of a new 1.8 mile "linear park." The park follows the length of the train track from the edge of the San Elijo Lagoon south to Via de la Valle in Del Mar. In addition, there are pedestrian bridges along the railroad corridor and improvements to the existing station including elevators, stairways and reconstruction of Highway 101. Consisting of a bike and pedestrian path as well as great landscaping, the park adds beauty and friendliness to Solana Beach.

Additionally, plans have been approved for a privately constructed $26 millions project which will consist of a public plaza with shops and restaurants, 140 rental lofts and office space and may be the future home of the North Coast Repertory Theatre. Also, there will be an underground parking garage with 500 slots for transit users. The garage will cost $13 million and will be owned by the North County Transit District.
